Summer Reading

Summer vacation is right around the corner and everyone is looking forward to a break from school and routine. Unfortunately, with that break comes the SUMMER SLIDE. Students that don’t read will lose an average of two months of reading skills. That means the first six weeks in the fall are spent re-learning old material to make up for summer loss.

What can you do? Research shows that having your middle school student read just 6 books during the summer will help them maintain their skills and reading 10 books can help them make gains.  Try to encourage your child to feed their brain over the summer by choosing their own books.

McAuliffe students that fill out 6 or more of our two minute book reviews will get to join us in the library for a Reading Celebration and Pizza Party at the beginning of the 2019-20 school year! The book review form can be found here.

If your student wants to earn prizes for their reading efforts, the Denver Public Library also has their annual summer of reading program for ages birth through 12th grade that begins June 1st.
