DPS Community Meetings – Impact on McAuliffe

Over the next few weeks, the office of Family and Community Engagement (FACE) is hosting school-based conversations at elementary schools in the Greater Park Hill/Stapleton area focused on families of 3rd and 4th graders that will soon be making their middle school choices. During these meetings, FACE will seek to gather feedback on middle school program desires for the 2017-18 school year and beyond, and to discuss with families the pros and cons of the following options:

  • Increasing the size of McAuliffe to occupy the full space at Smiley
  • Opening a second middle school at Smiley and decreasing the size of McAuliffe

View the DPS PowerPoint presentation here regarding the shared boundary enrollment growth and more about the options being presented to 3rd and 4th grade families. Not included in this PowerPoint are details of the impact on McAuliffe staff and programming.

Cherry Creek Rotary / McAuliffe Essay Contest

The Cherry Creek Rotary Club has long emphasized literacy in its programs, and we are excited to partner with them again for our 2nd annual Essay Contest at McAuliffe. This essay contest encourages and rewards excellent thinking and writing, and we believe it will complement the work that is already being done in our IB program. Students will choose one attribute from the IB Learner Profile Traits and write a personal narrative regarding that trait. The winning essays will reflect clear and compelling messages of understanding and personal growth through their chosen IB Learner Profile Trait. Students and teachers received their instructions on Tuesday, November 3rd, and essays are due online to Anne Walker by Tuesday, December 1st; late essays will not be accepted. The four finalists will be announced Tuesday, December 8th. We will host a celebration, including refreshments, on Wednesday, December 16th to honor the top essayists. There will be prizes for the four contestants who have the best essays: 1st Place: $300, 2nd Place: $200, 3rd Place: $100, and 4th Place: $50. See more details here.

DPS recently highlighted one of our Language Arts classes, which we’re proud to share here. This was a collaborative project with Stephanie Gronholz, Jennifer Snodgrass, and Anne Walker for 7th grade Language Arts last year.

“In Stephanie Gronholz’s Language Arts classroom at McAuliffe International School in northeast Denver, small groups of students are digitally redesigning poetry in iMovie. They blend sound and imagery as they decipher the layers behind poetry such as Casey at the Bat. “It’s a different way of getting down to the meaning of the poem,” said one student, “what it means on the surface and then down on a deeper level.” Watch the video “The Poetry of Success”. Also with Spanish subtitles.”
