6TH GRADE PERFORMANCES OF ALICE IN WONDERLAND!- MAY 18-20
Come and join us for a trip down the rabbit hole in our production of Alice in Wonderland, May 18-20 at 6:30pm! The most frequently quoted and well-known children’s story of all time is brought to life by McAuliffe 6th graders. Lewis Carroll’s unflappable young heroine, Alice, takes a tumble down an enchanted rabbit hole to an off-kilter world of mock turtles, punctual rabbits, and mad tea parties. Playing cards hold court, and nothing is as it seems in this land where whimsy and wordplay are the order of the day. Will Alice be able to get find her footing in this bizarre place?! More importantly, will she ever figure out how to get home?! Tickets are available for purchase online here, or at the door.
THANKS FOR COMING TO TRAGEDIE OF MACBETH!
Thanks to all who came to our production of Tragedie of Macbeth! Our 8th grade theatre students performed four consecutive nights, and their command of this Shakespeare tale was impressive! Thanks to Macy for her opening dance performance each evening, which wowed the audience.
PROPOSAL FOR SECOND MCAULIFFE SCHOOL
McAuliffe has applied to open a second school in the Manual campus for the 2016-2017 school year. Please see this letter from Principal Kurt Dennis regarding this proposal and how to find out more information.
OUR BIGGEST SERVICE LEARNING DAY YET!
Our 3rd annual Service Day was a big success on Friday, with over 700 students working with local and global charity organizations for the whole day. The morning began with a keynote address from Mayor Michael Hancock and a grant ceremony in which students presented a total of over $5700 raised through Penny Harvest to 21 charity organizations. The representatives of those organizations shared heartfelt stories about their charity work with our entire student body, and it was hard to tell who was more moved by the experience! Then students headed out to local charities to lend a helping hand at these very deserving organizations. Thanks to all our staff and parent chaperones for helping us make this Service Day possible, and a big thanks to service learning coordinator Sherry Beardshear for organizing this massive undertaking!
MATH TEAM TAKES 3RD AT MATHCOUNTS STATE COMPETITION!
McAuliffe Math Team students competed in the MathCounts State competition in late March at DU. Four students represented McAuliffe in the team competition and took 3rd Place, and nearly all competing at the individual level came in the top 100, including 7th, 9th, and 11th place. Congratulations to the entire Math Team of 55 kids who have been working hard for two mornings a week for the entire year, and a big thanks to Coach Graham Ray!
DESTINATION IMAGINATION TEAM WINS REGIONAL COMPETITION!
Congratulations goes to our two Destination Imagination teams who competed in the district competition on Saturday in the category ‘Feary Tales’. The 8th grade team (pictured below) came in 1st place! They will now go on to the state competition, which will be held in April. Our 6th grade team came in 4th place overall, missing 3rd place and a shot at state by only a matter of a few points.
THANKS FOR SUPPORTING OUR PRODUCTION OF HAIRSPRAY!
Thanks to all who supported and attended our 7th grade Theatre Arts production of Hairspray! Three different casts put on preview and full productions of this lively musical this past week, and the students gave their last performance on a very snowy February day to a packed house. Congratulations to all the students who took part in this production, and a big thanks to Drama teacher Jennifer Carabetta for working with the kids to put on such a great show!
UPCOMING STUDENT TRIPS
McAuliffe staff and parents are leading some great upcoming trips for students, including Curtain Time in London and a STEM-focused trip to England, and a trip to New York City being planned for the 2015/16 school year. There is a trip in April for current 8th graders to Washington D.C., and planning has begun for the trip to Washington D.C. in May 2016 for next year’s 8th graders. MCAULIFFE LANGUAGE ARTS CLASS FEATURED IN DPS VIDEO
DPS recently highlighted one of our Language Arts classes, which we’re proud to share here. This was a collaborative project with Stephanie Gronholz, Jennifer Snodgrass, and Anne Walker for 7th grade Language Arts last year.
“In Stephanie Gronholz’s Language Arts classroom at McAuliffe International School in northeast Denver, small groups of students are digitally redesigning poetry in iMovie. They blend sound and imagery as they decipher the layers behind poetry such as Casey at the Bat. “It’s a different way of getting down to the meaning of the poem,” said one student, “what it means on the surface and then down on a deeper level.” Watch the video “The Poetry of Success”. Also with Spanish subtitles.”
SCHOOL ACCOUNTABILITY COMMITTEE
The McAuliffe School Accountability Committee meets the third Thursday of every month at 7:00pm in the library. The meetings are open to the public. If you would like to be a voting member of this committee, please contact principal Kurt Dennis at firstname.lastname@example.org.
