Welcome to McAuliffe International School!

Have you wanted to do community service with your child? The McAuliffe community will be involved in a school-wide Service Learning Day on Friday, April 10th. To make this wonderful experience possible for our students, we are in need of parent chaperones. The day will start with a check presentation assembly to our Penny Harvest non-profit recipients at 8:30am. If you cannot participate the whole day, please consider helping from 9:00am -2:00pm during the service project work that will occur on-site at McAuliffe or at a non-profit organization. If you are available to help out on April 10th, please email our Service Learning Coordinator, Sherry Beardshear at

McAuliffe is pleased to present a lecture for parents called “It’s not the 70’s Anymore” by attorney Karen Steinhauser, on Monday, April 13th at 6:30pm in the auditorium. This lecture is designed primarily for 8th grade families heading to high school in the fall, but all parents are invited to attend. Karen was a prosecutor in Denver for 20 years, and is now a law professor at DU and a criminal defense attorney. At least half of her practice is representing young people between the ages of 12 and 25. She put together this presentation to address the disturbing trends in the law pertaining to juveniles and would always hear from parents that the kids weren’t doing anything worse than what we did. The problem is a lot has changed, including attitudes of police and prosecutors and judges, and the change in technology has added so many more complications for kids. Please join us for this FREE lecture. You are welcome to bring your student, but it is designed for parents.

We’re gearing up for this year’s Outdoor Education Camp for all 6th and 7th grade students! We invite all parents and students to join us for our Camp Presentation Night on Monday, April 20th in the auditorium at the following times:

  • 6th grade students and parents: 6:00-7:00pm
  • 7th grade students and parents: 7:15-8:15pm

If you cannot attend the presentation time for your student’s grade, please come to the other grade presentation. Outdoor education camp runs Tuesday, May 26th – Thursday, May 28th for both grades. Sixth grade students will go to YMCA of the Rockies at Estes Park, and 7th grade students will go to YMCA at Snow Mountain Ranch in Winter Park. All YMCA camp paperwork will be mailed out the week of March 29th in an envelope with student report cards and surveys. All paperwork will be due back on Monday, April 20th. For questions or to volunteer to be a parent chaperone, please contact Sherry Beardshear at

The lottery for seats at McAuliffe for the 2015-16 school year has been completed and families have been notified of their placement via email or letter by the Office of Choice and Enrollment Services. McAuliffe accepted 285 sixth grade students (35 more than the previous school year). Unfortunately, we were not able to meet all of the demand from families in the Greater Park Hill/Stapleton Enrollment boundary. One hundred thirty-five students from the boundary have been placed on a waitlist and will be notified in order as seats become available. If you have a question regarding the waitlist, we will be able to provide you with information starting on Monday, March 16th. If you have questions or concerns regarding the School Choice process, please contact the DPS Office of Choice and Enrollment Services at 720-423-3493.

For families that were placed at McAuliffe for the 2015-16 school year but wish to relinquish their student’s spot, please complete and turn in this form right away. (Spanish language version)

Thanks to all who supported and attended our 7th grade Theatre Arts production of Hairspray! Three different casts put on preview and full productions of this lively musical this past week, and the students gave their last performance on a very snowy February day to a packed house. Congratulations to all the students who took part in this production, and a big thanks to Drama teacher Jennifer Carabetta for working with the kids to put on such a great show!

DPS recently highlighted one of our Language Arts classes, which we’re proud to share here. This was a collaborative project with Stephanie Gronholz, Jennifer Snodgrass, and Anne Walker for 7th grade Language Arts last year.

“In Stephanie Gronholz’s Language Arts classroom at McAuliffe International School in northeast Denver, small groups of students are digitally redesigning poetry in iMovie. They blend sound and imagery as they decipher the layers behind poetry such as Casey at the Bat. “It’s a different way of getting down to the meaning of the poem,” said one student, “what it means on the surface and then down on a deeper level.” Watch the video “The Poetry of Success”. Also with Spanish subtitles.”
